A number of Lead Free Roadmaps have led to some important discussions as to the timing and impact of Lead Free Electronics. The European community has been especially active in these Technology Roadmaps. The WEEE initiative from Europe is another driver behind the interest in Lead Free Technology Roadmaps because of the recycle discussions involving various products. Two recent roadmaps, one from the Research Institute and another from soldertec in Europe have provided some OEM input to this important issue. Both the Research Institute and soldertec have an impressive set of OEMs involved in their consortia including HP, Intel, Amkor, Honeywell, Raytheon and Nokia to name a few. In the weeks ahead, specific OEM roadmaps for Lead Free will be reviewed and some discussion on the pros and cons to the expansion of Lead Free initiatives will be explored. |
International Roadmap Partners In the last few weeks, Japanese/American partnerships have been growing with several press releases and this week is no exception with the Sony/Real Networks (#4) where an R&D roadmap will be shared and equity investment by Sony has solidified the financial goals. On the Sony deal:§ There is a master R&D agreement, so there will be a regular process for reviewing projects at both companies," . "It will lay out a roadmap so we can collaborate as tightly as possible, spanning the PC, mobile devices and TV."o Now we are seeing some additional partnerships from Europe. STMicroelectronics in Geneva is accelerating System-on -Chip technology with Alticast for the robust Digital Set-Top box market in North America. One of the most interesting product roadmap sharing comes from Infineon in Munich and Triquent on GAAS high speed devices for the 3G phone and RF/Microwave areas watch for more international alliances between large players who are willing to share their roadmaps to build revenues especially in the fast paced 3G market.
